While Dr. Mes has called Lafayette his home since August 1978, his training in plastic surgery spans half the globe. Based upon the excellent high school grades he earned in his native Rhodesia, the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa awarded him a full scholarship to pursue his study of medicine. Upon his graduation in 1969, he began his training in general surgery in England at Mansfield General Hospital. Based upon his skill, knowledge, and personal commitment to excellence, Dr. Mes received the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburg, Scotland, which is similar to board certification in the United States. He started his plastic surgery training at the Bridge of Earn Hospital in Scotland. The next step in his journey was to continue his plastic surgery residency training at the University of Michigan, where he also received a fellowship and conducted research.
At the University of Michigan, he met a Louisiana plastic surgeon who invited him to work at his busy practice here in Lafayette. Dr. Mes accepted the position and challenge of moving to a new home with his wife and young children. Dr. Mes said he felt at home here because the people of Lafayette share his traditional values reflecting the importance of family, treating everyone as a neighbor, and the importance of community. When you visit him at his office, you see these values in the way he and his staff practice. When he is not working, Dr. Mes enjoys spending time with his four grandchildren, horseback riding and making cabinets. He and his wife travel extensively as well as spend time in their Carolina mountain cabin. His spirit of adventure and exploration is reflected in the way that he practices as he finds new ways to advance the profession of plastic surgery. Dr. Mes received his certification as a plastic surgeon from the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the Royal College of Surgeons. His professional affiliations and honors include the following: American Association of Plastic Surgeons, Louisiana State Medical Society, Leading Physicians of the World, and the Coller Prize of Medical Research
